The history of this epic Surf location
eight Days / seven Nights
Lore has it, Costa Rica’s “First” surfer Guilermo Miranda set out in the early 1970’s along the Pacific coast from Nicaragua to Panama in search of the “best” wave. Rio Claro was his choice. A beautiful river break on the Northern Osa Peninsula adjacent to Corcovado National Park and within a couple hours walking distance of Drake Bay. Here, at Punta Marenco he purchased 300 hectares of pristine primary rainforest and beach front land.
The land is now the Punta Marenco Biological Reserve, formerly known as the Marenco Biological Reserve. It is a protected area and National Wildlife Refuge, officially designated as Punta Río Claro National Wildlife Refuge. The reserve is known for its diverse flora and fauna, including various bird, mammal, and reptile species.
The Miranda family operates Punta Marenco Lodge. A small establishment with natural vibes and a rustic ambiance located in one of the most spectacular places on Earth.
Located within the property’s boundaries is the mouth of the Rio Claro. This river begins near the town of Los Planes and is additionally fed from the many tributaries of the Osa Peninsula rainforest.
Where this beautiful river meets the Pacific Ocean, a touch south of Marenco is one of Costa Rica’s best spots to surf and a must-do experience.
